$

Hello,

I have a couple of Win-10 x64 VMs in esxi managed by vSphere Client version 6.5.0.10000 . The updates are automatic and they perform automatic restart of the windows. Sometimes the machine is stuck int endless hang on spinner on startup in Windows 10 . The machine in this situation need a reboot and after the reboot the problem is fixed. It's very annoying and it happens very frequently.

Thank you.

Extend a Centos7 partition beyond 2TB with VMware 6.7

Hi guys,

Hope all is well.

I need some guidance or a tutorial on how to grow my Centos server partition from 2TB to 3.5TB.

As you may know, fdisk doesn't allow growing a disk beyond the 2TB mark. I already did fdisk and got it to the 2TB threshold but I can't increase it any more.

What would be the best way to grow the /home partition since I need it to store more files etc.

Can I just create a new partition from that extra space added to the server (its additional space on the same disk, not a different disk).

How can I do it? That would be another way. Set up another partition with the remaining space and move stuff over there.

Or if I can just expand the 2TB partition to the 3.5TB with another command that works that would be great.

Here is my df -h:

Filesystem           Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on

devtmpfs             7.8G     0  7.8G   0% /dev

tmpfs                7.8G  4.0K  7.8G   1% /dev/shm

tmpfs                7.8G  9.2M  7.8G   1% /run

tmpfs                7.8G     0  7.8G   0% /sys/fs/cgroup

/dev/mapper/cl-root   50G   15G   36G  30% /

/dev/sda1           1014M  177M  838M  18% /boot

/dev/mapper/cl-home  2.0T  1.6T  376G  82% /home

/dev/loop0           2.2G   36M  2.0G   2% /tmp

tmpfs                1.6G     0  1.6G   0% /run/user/1010

How can I expand cl-home beyond 2TB without having to create another partition? can I just extend it without fdisk?

Let me know.

Name Resolution (DNS) doesn't work for Guest machines (NAT Configuration)

I am using Vmware player 15 and have 3 guest hosts (A,B,C) with NAT configuration. A is configured as DNS server (Centos 7) - ip address 192.168.136.11 - whereas B and C are  DNS clients (Ubuntu 18.04 Desktop) - ip addresses 192.168.136.12,  192.168.136.13.

When I try to ping C from B or B from C using FQDN of C and B respectively I am getting the following error:  B.example.com: Temporary failure in name resolution or C.example.com: Temporary failure in name resolution

Any explanation ? Please help

I want the Ubuntu machine will be functioning as a DHCP server and also the default gateway of the Windows 10 machine

I've configured one interface of Ubuntu and windows 10 to be on vmnet8 (host only) , the second vmnet of Ubuntu is bridged to host.

Now windows can ping the Ubuntu but there is no internet connection to google...

how to fix it so windows 10 will be able to get internet using the Ubuntu machine

File Server Migration - Keeping the same Server name

$

Dear Community - I have a virtual server (Windows Server 2012) that needs to be upgraded to Windows Server 2019 OS. The server is part of a domain -2016. This server is a VM and I am using the VMware vSphere/vCenter Client 6.0. We are using a relative new host – Dell PowerEdge R640. For some reason the VM in question has only one virtual disk and is used with two partitions. One for the OS (150 GB) and the second partition to store data (1.3 TBs). We are running out of space and now I have added 500 GB space to the VM in question.  The system doesn’t allow me to add more than 2 TBs  space Virtual disk and for some reason I am not able to add the new 500 GBs to the Data partition (1.3 TBs). When trying to extend the data 1.3 TBs partition to include the new 500 GBs partition, the “Extended Volume” option is gray out and I am not able to do so.

The goal is to create a new VM with the same server name, install on this VM server Windows 2019 OS and create two Virtual hard disks – One about 300 GBs for the OS and the second one with 2.0 TBs for the Data.

We must keep the same server name on the new VM server and bring (Copy/move/import/restore) all the Data, including all ACLs, NTFS permissions, share folders, SIDs, etc. into the new server.

Kindly please provide the best approach to achieve this task with zero loss and be able to keep the same server name in the new VM? Please provide any possible suggestions and thank you for your time and assistance on this matter.

Migrating server to Win2016 the ?easy way?

$

I have a few 2008/ 2012 servers that I need to upgrade to Win2016.  Nearly all of them follow the model of having the OS and the DATA partitions on separate data stores.  None of them have any domain controller roles.  In at least two cases, I want to avoid the down time to backup/copy a couple terabytes of data.  I think I can do something like this:

  1. Create a new data store for the 2016 version of the VM
  2. Install Windows, get patches, etc, using a temporary server name (might be a good time to learn how to make a template!)
  3. Shutdown the old server
  4. Remove the data VMDKs from the old virtual machine
  5. Remove the old server name from AD
  6. Rename the NEW server to match the old.  Update IP address data as needed.  Reboot
  7. Confirm the name change took, add server to AD domain, shut down NEW server
  8. Attach data VMDKs to new server
  9. Power on new server, check that drive letters got assigned correctly.  Check/recreate shares as needed.
  10. Remove the old server from inventory

In theory, I don't think I need to power down the new VM prior to adding the data VMDKs, but I'm a cautious fellow.

Did I miss any steps?

Continuous readin of TSC

Hi,

i've created my own bootloader and running it from a floppy image in a VM. The code repeatedly reads the TSC value and print it if the difference is larger than 100000 (about 0.05[ms] on my setup).

About 8 times a second i see a jump in the tsc, with delays up to 2[ms].

Any idea what the source of this is?

(TSC is running at 2GHz, and i've added the monitor_control.virtual_rdtsc = FALSE setting.

Main loop of the code i used:

  while (i < 100000)

  {

    x = __rdtsc();

    y = __rdtsc();

    x1 = x & 0xffffffff;

    x2 = (x >> 32) & 0xffffffff;

    if (((y - x) > 100000))

    {

      printf("TSC jump: %d %08x:%08x %d\n", i, x2, x1, y - x);

      i++;

    }

  }

Output:

TSC jump: 459 0011c215:dccfe2f6 4494498

TSC jump: 460 0011c216:1dc73574 1367202

Physical server to VM conversion question

$

This question is two fold however I know the answer to one of them the question comes down to the order in which I do this as two operations have to happen here and I'm just looking to see what some think the best practice would be.

I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 physical server and it's a DC, I'm planning for in-place upgrades to Server 2019. The question I have is should I convert the 2008 R2 server first to a VM before doing in-place Windows Server upgrades, or get my upgrades done on the physical and then convert to a VM. What are in-place upgrades like on a VM? As I've never done them before.

Thank you.

VMware failed to Boot/Start HDP 3.0.1 with some splash screen error.

Dear community,

I hope my message finds you in good health. I have been facing an error since last week and I am unable to solve this problem. I googled the problem a lot but it appears no one else encountered this specific error. I am also a beginner in the VMware world. I am attaching the screenshot below.

HDP_boot_error_vmware.PNG

I am getting this screen whenever I try to boot up my HDP 3.0.1 Big Data Sandbox. It was working fine. I then shut down the VM. Then the next day when I restarted, it showed this error. I then deleted the whole storage then re-imported the whole HDP VM. Got this screen above.

I am also attaching the log file below. Please, have a look at it.

Thank you,

Hamza Nasir

What does VMware Tools' vm3dservice.exe do in guest?

I recently upgraded VMware Tools to Version 11.0.0, build-14549434 in a Windows 7 guest. There is a process running vm3dservice.exe that is missing product details but signed by VMware. I googled it but could not find out much. I don't want processes running unnecessarily. What does the process do? Is it needed?

RHEL-8 guest falure under V15.5

Please help a newcomer to VMWARE and RHEL-8,

I have successfully installed, on my Win-10 laptop, VMWARE Workstation V15.5 followed by creating a new Linux virtual machine plus having the VMWARE wizard complete the guest installation

from the RHEL-8 ISO file.

Although I was not given the opportunity to select the GUI interface, the guest RHEL-8 started normally and I was able to login with my user-id / password and execute a few simple commands

until I tried to execute a “man -k user” command that completely failed to produce the expected results.

I repeated it with diagnostics via “man -k -d user” which shows various missing files that may point to the root of the problem.

Please review my session log below and thanks for any help in this matter.

Unable to Install Windows OS 2019 VM on ESXi

Hi Gents,

I am trying to create and setup VM (Windows evaluation server 2019 OS) on the ESXi 6.7 host, but getting below error which I cannot find the exact solution how to fix it.  Looking for answers here ??

Operation on CD-ROM image file /vmfs/volumes/5dd6b325-521cd908-20e7-14feb5d2f934/17763.737.190906-2324.rs5_release_svc_refresh_SERVER_EVAL_x64FRE_en-us_1.iso has failed. Subsequent operations on this file are also likely to fail unless the image file connection is corrected. Try disconnecting the image file, then reconnecting it to the virtual machine's CD-ROM drive. Select Continue to continue forwarding the error to the guest operating system. Select Disconnect to disconnect the image file.

Thanks!!

Excel file refuses to load VBA in VM, still runs perfectly on metal

I cloned a Win 7 64 bit install I use daily using Vcenter Converter

Intel I-5

Windows 7 64

to run in a VM  running on a Ryzen3700x.

Everything seems to be working perfectly in limited testing except for 1 strange failure

I have an Excel 2007 workbook, that is perfectly happy on the original box.   I can  even open it  in Excel 2019 .   So the file itself is NOT corrupt .  Tested on multiple versions of the same workbook as well.

For some reason, this same file is refusing to load on the VM , throwing the "Excel has found unreadable content ....do you want to recover..."  error.

It has a problem with the VBA code and wont load with it intact.    How is this possible ??  A clone is a clone, right ?

The only change I can possible see as affecting this , is the fact that the Office 2007 had to be re authorized, and it accessed the MSOcache install file on first boot .  Not sure why that would break it.

Also, I've tried other Excel files on this VM and they seem to run fine, VBA and all.   Just the one personal project that won't  load.

I tried deleting all EXD files (Excel ActiveX) , no luck .    Ran a repair on Office. No luck .   Haven't done a full reinstall of Office yet.

Does this sound like anything anyone has heard of before (lol, yeah I know)

Add 3840x1600 display resolution to windows 10 guest

Hi Guys,

I bought a new wide screen monitor recently. The native resolution is 3840x1600. When I connected to the virtual windows 10 guest, I found I cannot use the native resolution. I can do 2560x1600 or 3840x2160. And there is even a 3840x2400. But no 3840x1600. I have already set the display memory to 64MByte. Should be enough. I searched knowledge base and did find a document about add resolution. In that document,

VMware Knowledge Base

it said I should modify the windows registry and search for vmx_svga. But I didn't find it in my guest machine. I already installed the vmware tools.

Could anyone tell me how to do it? I'm using esxi 6.5

Thanks.

Installed a new vmware workstation 15.5.1 on win10 pro, using linux/unbuntu 18.04 guest

Trying to get to install the vmware tools (not sure what options I may have selected when I installed the work station). But the install vmware tools menu is disabled. When I run my VM then I see: re-install menu that too is disabled.

How do I fix this.

Without it cut-n-paste etc not working
