I've checked the VMware Product Interoperability Matrices to know latest version of VMware tools I can install on ESXi 6.5u3, and thats 11.0.5. We want to be able to install VMWare tools via Datto and a scheduled script. I can see there are some old VM's with ESX/ESXi 4.0 and laver (VM version 7) compatibility - Is it safe to update VMTools to 11.0.5 on those, without raising hardware compatibility?

are there any known problems using Encrypting File System (EFS) with Windows Server 2016 on ESX 6.5?
We have been using EFS for years on Windows Server 2008 without any problems.
Four weeks ago, due to EOS of Server 2008, we moved everything (including the EFS-enabled production datastore = VMDK file) to another existing VM which is running Server 2016.
Right now I can't check the exact versions of the VMs involved but I believe we had v5 with 2008 and v8 with 2016 (but I might be wrong).
The symptom that I can see from within Server 2016 by using a low-level disk viewer is that the disk sectors that were previously holding the encrypted data of the affected files are now holding binary zeroes (0x00). However, the file system entries of the affected files are intact (file size, location of file content on disk, modified dates, attributes, etc.). When we try to open such a file, it is empty.
Some of the affected files were not changed for years (mostly JPG files) while some other affected files were created (or edited) after our migration to Server 2016 (mostly XLS files).
Additionally, I have found out that the provisioning type of the VMDK has changed in the process of remounting it - from "eager-zeroed" to "thin" and therefore the VMDK had 100GB less in size than before.
However, after we have dismounted and inflated the VMDK (now showing "eager-zeroed"), the problem did NOT disappear, i.e. we still have data loss sometimes when saving new files or editing existing files!
We are also working a lot with unencrypted documents on the same VMDK and did not have any problems with those files so far.

I have an environment that is on the latest 6.5 patches and over 100 hosts on auto deploy. We have only 9,000 VMs. We received a vulnerability alert for VMTools 10.x and need to get to VMTools 11.x. ASAP
From my research, there is only two way to accomplish this. Please advise if there is a better way. The main goal is to avoid downtime and interruption while automating as much as possible.
Option 1 - Update VMTools package to 11.x in Auto Deploy image, reboot/redploy all auto deploy hosts then update VMTools per image
Option 2 - Package VMTools 11.x and deploy to VMs via SCCM with no reboot option. Reboot/update tools on OS updates

We are looking at doing a virtualise only policy where i work instead of building windows physical servers. My question is if you have a Single host say 2 x 16 CORE + HT 64 logical. If the virtual machine requires 20 vCPUs would this be ok? I have read articles before that you shouldnt assign more vCPUs than a single physical core has. It will work but there will be a performance hit and its best to go 2 x 20 COREs so you can assign 20 vCPUs.
There will be no other VMs on this host only this single VM. Hot add of cpu & memory will be disabled so it doesnt impact numa.
Run Windows in Ubuntu with VMware Player is an article that lead me to VMware, but I have no idea what to do now. I am unable to figure out how to download, let alone use the VMware player. If only VMware experts are able to set-up and use the VMware player, then I will need assistance from the experts.
Hello everyone, today I'm looking for some help or may be just a doubt, and it is about powering off my virtual machines, some people tell me that could damage the OS of my virtual machines because it's like unpluge the power wire of a computer, then I started to power off the guest of the virtual machine and my boss said that could couse the same problem, so I have to lunch the virtual machine console and shutdown the OS of that computer one by one and there are 10 and it takes some time. I know vmware have the opcion of automate the powering and the shutdown but I would like to know if that may couse problems to my virtual machines

I'm trying to find a tool that I've used in the past to report on VM resource usage.(Memory, CPU, etc.) The tool would run and produce a report that would, for example, inform you that a particular VM was configured with X amount of RAM but is utilizing less and it would recommend that RAM be reduced to reclaim resources. Does anyone know what that tool is?

I have noticed that if I re-install/upgrade VMware tools from the 64bit installer within Windows Server 2016 it creates an additional instance of the VMCI host driver in device manager.
The extra driver creates a Warning event in the Windows system log = VMCI: Failed to create device (status=0xc0000035) Source vmci EventID: 2.
While troubleshooting the event, I removed and re-installed the VMware tools. This created a third instance of the driver and a second instance of the System Log warning.
I noticed that the extra devices (displaying the Bang exclamation for not functioning hardware) showed in their properties window that the driver failed due to "duplicate name exists".
Workaround = In troubleshooting on a non-vital system, I right clicked and un-installed the errored instances of the VMCI Host driver (duplicates) and left the copy that the driver loaded correctly.
Upon restart the System log warning did not return and the normal VMware VMCI Host Device driver loaded normally.
Is this problem created by the VMCI Host driver being locked by the windows system during re-install/un-install?
Reason for the question is to possibly have the issue corrected in future revisions of the VMWare tools installer so manual removal of the erred drivers is not required.

Hi, I am a newbie to VMware. However, I am a very experienced computer professional. I have a VMware Virtual Machine Windows 2008 R2 that I am trying to do an in place upgrade to Windows 2012. I want to go to Windows server 2016 eventually. I run the setup program. I click the install button. The procedure tells me "setup is coping temporary files" . I see "setup is starting" and then the process stops abruptly and returns to the first screen with the install button. This windows server is a member of an active directory. I created a plain Windows 2008 R2 server in the same VMWare environment and was able to upgrade that server with no problems. I could really use some assistance with this problem. Any thoughts?
I'm running a cloud based management (runcloud) on my ubuntu server.
I freshly installed ubuntu 18.04. After an amount of time VPS memory usage goes from 500mb to 11-12 GB.
I tried to reinstall ubuntu 16.04, same thing happened.
Is this a known issue ? Is there a solution for this ? I'm just running a simple html file with one domain.
My provider is using Esxi.
Hi has anyone seen this issue, I have installed VM tools onto a guest windows 10 VM. Once installed it goes black the console and I cannot manage it. If you have come across this issue and resolved it I would appreciate your insight.

I have created a virtual machine using VMWare standalone client of my main Windows 10 PC. On starting the virtual machine in a new computer using VMware workstation 15 Player, it boots ok until the system tries to login but then an error message that is the title of this post appears on the desktop. Entering the password does not work manually.
I have established that something in the start up routine is deleting or overwriting both the two user files in the Profile list in the Registry so i am unable to log in to the system. I have tried a number of suggestions on the internet without success. One thing that may be a problem is the fact that my the users folders are on the D drive and not the C drive to save space on the C drive. and possible that may be the problem that is causing the registry ProfileList to be over written.
Any suggestions as to solving this problem would be appreciated.

Host: MacOS 10.14.6 (Mojave)
Guest: Windows XP Pro SP3 w/ IE8
I've been running this configuration for over 2 years with no apparent issues. I use Avira AntiVirus and Little Snitch 4.4.3 network filter on the host, with no firewall or other network restrictions on the guest. I recently tried to use Internet Explorer on the guest and, through trial and error, came to the conclusion that IE can access www.google.com (error-free), and also a few other sub-domains e.g. books.google.com (with varying certificate errors), but no other Internet sites.
Anyone else had a similar experience? Were you able to resolve it and, if so, how?

now I want to implement jupyter, that uses a db connection but this ubuntu is a server and has no browser/graphical interface installed

it is indicated to start the jupyter notebook - but you need ssh tunnel todo this
the local application in server "ubuntu" is listening on port 8888
I want to start a browser on my windows host to this server/port to open jupyter
there are so many pages with ssh tunnels for mobaxterm, by they need a ssh server/jump host
is this also needed for vmware guests ?
any link to a doc that could help me to connect from browser to guest because I need to execute in browser something similar to

and this would need to establish a connection to my guest on port 8888
