My raw partition is now looking like a vmdk

MY host system has a 256GB hd. I added a second 160gb hd and created a VM mapped to the 160gb hd. A couple of days ago I noticed that my available disk space on my host system was dropping dramtically. Checking, I found that VMware for some reason had create 75 vmdk's on my host system and appeared to be using them instead of the raw 160gb partition. At up to 2gb per virtual disk * 75 that would essentially be the equivalent of my 160gb hd. What caused this and why? I removed all the vmdk's and after a couple of other things it was seeing the raw partition again. But now, I see it has created the 75 vmdks again and is again eating up space on my host 256gb hd.
