USB modem to VM

We have a physical server with a monitoring application that uses a modem to send pager alerts to our On Call Engineer.   We want to virtualize this server and our previous Engineer purchased a DigiCom HUB and a USB Modem to eventually interface with the VM.

Well, that Engineer has left the company and I recently discovered that the Digicom/AnywhereUSB Hub does not support USB Modems attached to it.  So, we have re-think the project.   With the objective of using the USB Modem, the only option I can think of is to connect the USB modem to the ESXi5 host and pass it thru to the VM but the limitation to this, as I understand, is that we can't us vMotioning for the VM.  Are there any other limitations?   I'll need to address these with the staff when we present the new proposal.  Also, any advice on documentation to do this?
