PXE won't boot - reset needed

Hello,

I'm creating new VM with UEFI boot, these are configured with VMXNET3 and it should boot with PXE to connect to a microsoft WDS server.

Our Setup use to work,  but in some cases Virtual Machines won't boot from PXE, the problem is that apparently any request is going to DHCP server, at least DHCP server logs remains empty. I

Virtual machine remains in this state until network boot fails for timeout.

I've have seen that If we want to continue with the installation we could do these alternatives.

stop/start-vm.

  or

reset VM

or

disconnect/connect Network

But any of these operations use to  require a couple of attempts, after that the WDS installation starts, boot is loaded without trouble and installation continues until the end without troubles.

Now our DHCP server is Microsoft, but I've already done some test with Open DHPCERVER, AND in both cases the behaviour is the same.

As I don't have any log at any place, then the problem apparently seems that is related with the Virutal Machine network card when It boots from Network.

Our  PXE setup is configured for only UEFI Virtual Machines, as we don't have WDS for Bios/legacy virtual machines. We are working with ESX 6.0u3, and new virtual machines  reports version 11

Are vmxnet3 working well with UEFi PXE?

Repetitive copy of Win10 OS to VM

We will be repetitively copying a Win10 OEM license environment on a Dell computer to a VMWare image running on Workstation Player 15 on Linux.  The updated image will replace the earlier image over time.  We understand we must purchase an additional retail OS license to run the VM image.

Two questions please.  Will we run into problems with a single retail license as the VM is replaced (using the same host hardware)?  Is the same situation true if we were to run the VM on Fusion on a Mac, instead of Workstation Player on Linux?

Thank you, Ron

Unable to install ubuntu in vmware, causing BSOD(vmx86.sys) in windows 10

Hi,

I couldn't able to install ubuntu/kali in vmware player. After finishing initial configurations(default recommendations), the moment I press play virtual machine, windows 10 crashes with BSOD and shows

stopcode: KMODE EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED

what failed: vmx86.sys

The only change happen in my PC is replaced HDD with SSD(on same sata port). Other wise, It was working normal when I am using HDD.

I reinstalled windows10(thought of drivers problem) and tried vmware, same issue.

I tried to install kali 2018.2 32bit iso , no luck, and I tired prebuild kali vmware package, again no luck.

tried "verifier /reset" from run command, no use.

Not even this, even with vbox also I could not able to install any linux on my windows 10 PC, only difference is vbox is poping up error instead of BSOD!

I am using Dell inspiron 15, with Intel P6100, 8GB RAM, 240GB SSD.

Can any one encountered same, Please help me to fix this.

Changing hardware compatibility

I'm trying to run an old virtual machine, running Windows 98 Second Edition, which was created as a Workstation 5.x virtual machine, under VMware Workstation 15 Player (because I needed to install it on a new computer and I couldn't find an older version of VM Player to download). Apps keep becoming unresponsive and it keeps crashing. What can I do to improve system stability and responsiveness?

On a related note, is there a way to change the hardware compatibility setting in VMware Workstation 15 Player (not Pro!)? Documentation at Configuring and Managing Virtual Machines instructs you: Select the virtual machine and select VM> Manage> Change Hardware Compatibility. However, I can't find any VM to select and altogether I can't find  any way to change hardware compatibility.

Does someone try use VixDiskLib_InitEx like VixDiskLib_InitEx(6, 5, VixDiskLibLogMsgInfo, VixDiskLibLogMsgWarning, VixDiskLibLogPanic, NULL,NULL) in multithreading, in process, only do once. however, the thread may hung on in VixDiskLib_InitEx.

because the process is shut down by someother, I can't get stack info in time.

so Is some one have a similar problem? if you have , what can cause the problem?

                                                                                                     thank you very much!

Should the API ValidateCredentialsInGuest Work with Domain Based Users in Linux?

$

ValidateCredentialsInGuest is returning invalidguestlogin on a Linux system.

The system is configured to use a domain, and I can login via SSH as user@domain.com using login user (it goes through LDAP)... however, when I attempt to pass this via the ValidateCredentialsInGuest API I get the message it's invalid.

I can pass root or another non-root local user using the same same code.  I vaguely remember older versions of tools needing a reconfiguration to support this, but for the life of me can't find what that change is.

Here are the os/tools details

We are planning to migrate all the Citrix Xen "Linux" VM to Vmware VM, what is the workable V2V converter tool we can use?

What are the steps need to be followed?

TX packet drops

$

OK, we have all seen the packet drop KB where it recommends you can increase the RX buffers.   But it states nothing about the TX buffer in VMXNET3.

I have 2 VMs showing really high Transmit packet drops, and yes I'm aware of the display bug in vCenter 6.0 but I will tell you, despite this bug, I have increased rx buffers and witness the rx packets drops decrease substantially, so I know the change made a difference in my case.  So now I'm wondering about the Tx buffers.   I am assuming I can inflate them, but to what?  I can't find any recommendation on this anywhere.

There appears to be 2 tx related settings:

MAx Tx queues

Tx Ring Size

Please elaborate on whether these values, currently showing "not present" can be modified and to what extent in order to maximize performance

Thanks in advance.

ALso, FYI,  as for maybe this is caused by some other performance issue, I say NO.   Highest latency to disk is under 1ms.     memory is way under used and no ballooning on VM or swapping on the host, counters show 0.   CPU ready time is very low.

I'm open to other wisdom though..

Odd mouse behavior is guest OS when connected via OS X Screen Shaaring

$

Hello to all.

I am trying to chase down an odd behavior with the mouse in the guest OS when connecting to the host machine via Screen Sharing. The situation:

  • When I connect to a machine hosting a Boot Camp virtual machine,  by way of Screen Sharing, everything seems to work fine with both mouse and keyboard on the login screen; however, once I log into the guest OS, the keyboard continues to function properly but the mouse pointer disappears. Primary button click does not seem to produce any action (although it is impossible to tell where it is) but secondary button click seems to bring up context menu.
  • The same problem is seen across multiple similarly configured machines.
  • The Host OS is Mojave. The guest OS is Win 10 Enterprise. Both OSs are at current patch versions but the issue has been present since initial installation on all machines.
  • I am currently running Fusion 11.5 but the problem was the same with 10.
  • Everything works properly when working directly on the host machine. The mouse issue only appears when interacting by way of Screen Sharing.
  • While I am considering the possibility of going VNC directly to the guest OS, I would prefer to understand and resolve the issue that I am experiencing.

Thanks in advance for any insight!

Screen too small on copied VM

$

I have copied a VM (running Windows 7) on to my laptop (running Windows 10). I'm running Vmware Workstation version 9.  The VM is working, however the display is almost unreadable.  By default the VM comes up with a resolution of 3215 x 1713, and the font is so small I need a magnifying glass to read it.  I have changed the font size to "large" in Windows 7 to no avail.  I have changed the screen resolution to 1600 x 1200 on the VM.  It makes a change, however the result is a screen that takes up 1/4 of the screen of my host machine.  I've tried the "fit guest now" and "full screen" commands, all it does is return the resolution to the default.  I tried changing the machine configuration so the max resolution was 1600 x 1200 but that just keeps the screen size permanently 1/4 size.  Any help with this problem appreciated!

Windows Server 2012 (x64) stuck when rebooting (HPE ESXI v6.5 U3)

$

Hello.

I've searched around and I've found lots of instances of users complaining about similar issues, but I don't think there is a single solution or reason for this issue - at least none that I can see, I need some help figuring this out.

Very frequently Windows will hang during the reboot process, but when I say hang it isn't exactly unresponsive; the system will stop most of its processes and functionality, but it will still have the kernel running, replies to ping requests, and even tries to negotiate RDP connections but then fails probably due to not being able to validate the login credentials... but for all intents and purposes the reboot process just stalls forever. If I open the ESXI web console, the servers will show their logon screen (actually, the clock and the message "Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to login"). The clock will be running accurately, but that's it. I cannot interact with it and the only solution is to force-reboot the VM. The host and guests are 3 years old, I can't really remember if this issue was always present (originally HPE ESXI 6.0) or if it has been brought on by recent updates (either ESXI, VM Tools, Windows, or a combination). At this moment I'm using the latest version of ESXI (v6.5 U3) and it's bundled VMWare Tools (v10.3.10 build 12406962).

This problem happens 6 out of 10 times, and it just happened last night with two guests hosted on the same server while they were installing and applying Windows' updates. There are also many instances where this happens when the reboot process is initiated from within an RDP session (unclear why), but this was definetely not the case here. After manually rebooting the VMs I checked the event viewer on both servers and they pretty much tell the same story, the updates are installed and then a restart is needed to apply (or rollback), services then begin to enter the "stopped" state and then nothing else happens. The servers keep running with most of their services stopped but never actually reboot on their own. The last recorded message on the event viewer is:

The operating system is shutting down at system time ....

I also looked at the VMware logs from ESXI but nothing seems to happen close to the time of the restarts which would raise any eybrow in particular.

I would appreciate if you could throw some ideas around about what could be causing this issue.

Thank you!

P.S: I'm attaching the Windows' system events logs from both guests just in case.

Hello, I googled and searched also the RH KB but have not found an aswer to my questions:

1. Is the guest managed vmtools that red hat comes with upgradeable? Any repository I need to configure in UM?

2. Are the guest managed vmtools better than the classic VMWare vmtools available on the ESXi hosts?

Many thanks

Workstation Pro 12 - Windows 7 SP1 Blue Screen

Hi,

I'm new to the VMware community and applications- I work for an automation company that use VM Ware to run programming software for industrial automation (windows XP/ windows 7).

The issue I'm having is with a new VM for running windows 7. I have the VM created with a legitimate windows 7 License but when the application is open and the laptop is left idle for 10-15 mins the laptop will go into a blue screen [the laptop completely crashes]

I have downloaded Windows updates and this has made no difference. I have also created the VM with a new download of the Windows 7 software and still the issue persists. This issue does not occur if I have Windows XP only open in VM Ware.

See attached screen shots from Blue screen error.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Does anyone have appInfo working?

$

Hi all,

I have upgraded to VMware tools 11 on a single VM for the moment, and cannot seem to get the appInfo details to display.

ESXi is at 6.7u3

VM Hardware is v13

On the guest, I am running the command rpctool "info-get guestinfo.appInfo" but it says "No value found"

Just in case it wasn't enabled, I tried both VMwareToolboxCmd.exe config set appinfo enabled true and VMwareToolboxCmd.exe config set appinfo disabled false

Has anyone successfully got this working in their environment?

What is the command to get the VM's BOOT Mode (BIOS/EFI)?

$

Is there a command to check if a VM template is created with Boot Mode as BIOS/EFI? For ex: in esxi 6.7 if we create a VM template for Rhel7-x64, the boot mode is by default chosen as "BIOS", while for Rhel8-x64 its "EFI". Is there a command to get this boot Mode of a particular VM template?

I know from the GUI we can get this under "Edit Settings"-->"VM options" -- > "Boot Options", but I want to know if we have an equivalent command !!!

Thanks and Regards,

Does Customer Experience Improvement Program report Workstation crashes?

$

I have an academic licence of VMWare Workstation Pro for linux, on 15.5

I have no support entitlement, and can't submit technical support request.

15.5 is causing segfaults in vmware when using 3d acceleration in an xubuntu 18.04 guest.

This is a new problem; I did not have this problem in 15.0

Host is 18.04 too.

It is very, very annoying, since it is causing data loss.

I have disabled 3d acceleration.

My question: how do I report this? I can't send support requests. Do I need to anything, is the Customer Experience Improvement Program sending crash reports?

I always have it activated.

Virtual Printing

I am using VM Workstation 15.5 and have followed all the steps to install virtual printing but cannot get it to work. A few months ago I tried v15 and printing would not work so I went back to v14 and printing worked again. Windoze 10 has basically forced me to upgrade to V15 in order for Windows updates to be installed, otherwise I would have stuck with v14. I have tried uninstalling Virtual Printer and basically started form scratch to install printing but to no avail. Any suggestions?
